My fascination with science fiction and fantasy traces back to the 1960s when television became the portal to otherworldly adventures for my family. Together, we embarked on voyages alongside the intrepid crew of Star Trek, where my mother harbored a soft spot for a certain captain. The enigmatic tales of The Twilight Zone, the intergalactic escapades of Lost In Space, and any sci-fi movie we stumbled upon became cherished moments of exploration and wonder.
As I matured and discovered the joy of independent reading, I found myself captivated by the rich tapestries woven by literary giants such as Robert Howard’s Conan The Barbarian, J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan. Each page was a portal to realms teeming with adventure, magic, and larger-than-life characters, igniting my imagination and propelling me deeper into the realms of speculative fiction.
However, it was during my college years that my literary journey took a pivotal turn. Enrolled in a literature class, I was introduced to Frank Herbert's magnum opus, Dune. This seminal work, with its intricate world-building, complex characters, and profound themes, marked my first foray into true science fiction literature. I remain indebted to that instructor for insisting we delve into the sands of Arrakis, as Dune continues to hold a cherished place among my all-time favorite books.
Reflecting on my journey, I’m reminded of the vast array of sci-fi and fantasy authors whose works have enriched my life. For fellow enthusiasts of the genre, I’m curious: What books or movies originally sparked your interest in science fiction and fantasy?
